Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is a nonprofit legal services organization providing free civil legal assistance to Los Angeles County residents, with a focus on survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, veterans, and tenants facing eviction. CFJ delivers services through staff-run clinics and projects, in close collaboration with volunteers, community partners, and the court.
Position Overview
CFJ seeks a Supervising Attorney – Veterans to lead CFJ’s longstanding Veterans Project and provide legal services to low-income U.S. military veterans throughout Los Angeles County. This role reports to the Executive Director, supervises the Project Coordinator – Veterans, and works closely with the Director of Pro Bono as part of a collaborative, mission-driven legal team.
The Supervising Attorney will lead the design and delivery of pro bono-supported self-help and limited-scope clinics that promote veterans’ safety, stability, and successful reentry into civilian life. CFJ primarily serves veterans who are disabled, from historically underserved communities, and/or experiencing homelessness or housing instability—often facing intersecting civil legal issues such as record clearing, consumer debt, housing, and family law.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership and Clinic Oversight
Lead the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of pro bono-supported self-help and limited-scope clinics serving low-income veterans
Provide direct legal services using trauma-informed, client-centered, and culturally responsive practices
Train, supervise, and support volunteer attorneys
Develop and maintain legal templates, training materials, and clinic workflows to ensure accurate, efficient, and ethical service delivery
Review and supervise legal work performed by volunteers and staff to ensure quality control and compliance with ethical and program standards
Supervision, Administration, and Collaboration
Supervise the Project Coordinator and oversee volunteer attorneys participating in clinic-based services
Track program activities and outcomes; contribute to internal and grant reporting
Maintain collaborative relationships with partners, veteran service providers, and referral networks
Collaborate with CFJ leadership and program staff to align veterans’ services with organizational priorities and complementary programs
Qualifications
J.D. and active California State Bar membership in good standing
Minimum of five years’ experience providing legal services to low-income or underserved communities
Substantive experience in at least one of the following: record clearing, consumer debt/credit, housing law, family law, estate planning, or related civil legal issues
Experience supervising legal work in a direct-services or clinic-based setting
Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate effectively with staff, volunteers, and community partners
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative, team-based environment
Demonstrated commitment to equity, trauma-informed practice, and client-centered advocacy
Work Environment & Benefits
Salary Range: $95,000–$105,000 annually (DOE)
Full-time hybrid role (remote and in-person as needed at clinic sites)
