Counsel for Justice is seeking a full-time Paralegal to support our Veterans Project and help expand access to civil legal services for low-income U.S. military veterans throughout Los Angeles County.

Counsel for Justice provides free civil legal assistance to Los Angeles County residents, with a focus on survivors of domestic violence, immigrants, veterans, and tenants facing eviction. Through our clinics and projects, CFJ works alongside staff, volunteers, community partners, pro bono attorneys, and the court to help people navigate legal challenges with dignity and support.

About the Position

The Paralegal will support CFJ’s longstanding Veterans Project, which assists veterans with civil legal issues affecting housing stability, income, employment, and long-term security. Services may include support with public benefits, VA benefits, eviction prevention and limited eviction defense, record expungement, traffic citation resolution, and related legal needs. This position reports to the Supervising Attorney of the Veterans Project and works closely with other staff as part of a collaborative, mission-driven legal team.

Key Responsibilities

The Paralegal will:

  • Provide paralegal and administrative support to the Veterans Project team.

  • Conduct client intake, interview clients, gather documents, assess client needs, and support appropriate referrals.

  • Prepare legal forms, pleadings, correspondence, and other case-related documents under attorney supervision.

  • Support clinics, outreach events, trainings, and pro bono activities, including scheduling, logistics, document preparation, and client follow-up.

  • Maintain accurate and timely case notes, client information, service data, outcomes, and reports in CFJ’s case management system, including data needed for grant and program reporting.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate from an ABA-accredited program.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including sensitivity when working with individuals in crisis.

  • Prior experience in legal services, public benefits, housing, record clearing, or VA benefits.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Work Environment, Compensation, and Benefits

This is a full-time, hourly position with compensation ranging from $27 to $34 per hour, depending on qualifications.

This is a hybrid position, with remote work and in-person work as needed at clinic sites, partner locations, and CFJ’s administrative office.
