Answering the Call: CFJ’s New Volunteer Clinic Tackles LA’s Eviction Crisis

Tens of thousands of tenants in Los Angeles face eviction each year, and more than 30% never even get to tell their side of the story. These cases often result in default judgments, leaving tenants without a fair opportunity to stay in their homes. The stakes are high, and Counsel for Justice (CFJ) is stepping up. We're proud to announce the launch of the Eviction Legal Services Project, a bold, volunteer-powered initiative designed to bring fairness and clarity to LA's eviction process.

What’s Launching: The Eviction Legal Services Project

At the heart of this new initiative is the Answer Clinic, a virtual legal aid effort aimed at helping tenants respond to eviction filings before it’s too late. In partnership with the Los Angeles Superior Court, CFJ is offering remote volunteer opportunities via videoconference.

Volunteer attorneys will guide tenants through the court process, help them complete and file their "Answer" forms, and explain their legal rights, all with the goal of preventing unnecessary default judgments.

This is legal intervention where and when it matters most.

Why This Matters: The Crisis in the Courts

A groundbreaking April 2025 report by Stanford Law School brought sharp focus to LA's eviction crisis. Among its findings:

As Adam Murray, Executive Director of Inner City Law Center, noted in a recent LinkedIn post, the Stanford study has already helped push reforms. But data alone doesn’t solve the problem. That’s where CFJ’s Answer Clinic comes in, offering human support, legal clarity, and a path to justice.
