Celebrating Pro Bono Week: CFJ Highlights the Critical Role of Free Legal Services

As the legal community across the U.S. celebrates Pro Bono Week, the spotlight turns to the growing need for accessible legal assistance—and the volunteers working to close that gap. Diane Trunk, Deputy Executive Director of Counsel for Justice (CFJ), joined a recent broadcast to discuss the importance of pro bono services and the critical role CFJ plays in Los Angeles.

According to national studies, more than 90% of low-income individuals lack access to the legal support they need. Many are forced to either abandon their rights or navigate the complex legal system without representation. CFJ works to change that reality by providing free, volunteer-powered legal services in four key areas: immigration, domestic violence, eviction defense, and support for U.S. military veterans—particularly in securing disability accommodations and housing-related benefits.

CFJ’s services are available to individuals who meet specific income qualifications. Those in need can access support at in-person clinics located at the Stanley Mosk Courthouse and the Los Angeles Federal Building, where volunteer attorneys offer walk-in legal assistance. For more information, CFJ encourages the public to visit www.counselforjustice.org.

“Pro bono means ‘for the public good,’” Trunk emphasized. “It’s about filling the justice gap so that everyone, regardless of income, can access legal help when they need it most.”
