ELSP Volunteer Training: Substantive Law & Working with People in Crisis

In Los Angeles County, over 90 percent of tenants facing eviction represent themselves, often without any legal support. About 40% of eviction cases end in a default judgment because the tenant did not file an answer, even though they may have had valid defenses.

The Eviction Legal Services Project (ELSP) provides critical legal assistance to self-represented tenants navigating the eviction process. We’re recruiting law students and attorneys to support self-represented tenants in completing critical court forms, such as the Answer, Jury Demand, and Request to Waive Court Fees.
